"Sayonara...Shadow the Hedgehog."

He remembered saying that exact same phrase five years ago from this very spot, on the bridge of the space colony, ARK. And on the same day for the past five years, the ritual was the same, even if Tails and the rest stopped coming over the years. So what if he came alone? It didn't make a difference to him, he was paying his respects, and it wasn't his business if the others wanted to keep the tradition going or not.

Sonic the Hedgehog, now a full-fledged adult anthromorph hedgehog, kneeled down on the cold, steel deck of ARK's bridge, and laid down a single black rose, and a single red rose next to each other, in the very center of the darkened room. ARK had once again been shut down by the government after a half-year-long court ruling, some crazy humans claiming that Doctor Eggman should have legal possession of the colony, since it once belonged to his grandfather, Professor Gerald, but even the Eggman agreed that the place reeked of a foul curse and should be condemned forever. It took a full six months in which Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, and Eggman had to explain what had happened involving the colony, and finally, the ARK was shut down to all, but the heroes (and villains) that had saved the Earth from ultimate destruction.

"Shadow-san," Sonic muttered, still in a kneeling position, his head bowed and his eyes closed. "If only you hadn't sacrificed yourself when we performed Chaos Control together...I would have enjoyed spending the past five years with you, and many more years to come.

"Heh, listen to me, I'm acting so out of character...not at all like the fun-loving adventurer that you fought against so many times, and fought side-by-side with only once. I've grown up so much, Shadow-san...I still love to adventure just as much, even if Tails-kun has grown away from me, adventuring on his own, that little scamp. Tails is sixteen now...he grew up so fast. And you won't believe it, but he's hooked up with Amy-chan! Man, after all those years she was chasing me around, who'd've figured she'd go with Tails? Even though Amy's two years older than my twin-tailed surrogate brother, the two love each other dearly.

"Knuckles-san is still a treasure hunter extroirdenaire, of course. But how typical is it that he still hasn't found a girl of his own? He's such a stiff, he won't even stare at the babes whenever we hang at the beach together. But those shades of his are still really stylin', and they're five years old!

"Haven't heard much from Rouge-san, really. I hear she's in the legal business now, a lawyer...man, I tell ya, things just keep getting stranger and stranger from the days where I was just a kid.

"Eggman is back up to his old tricks again, but for some reason, he seems...changed. I dunno what it is, but ever since we returned to Earth five years ago, he's just been different. I can't really place my finger on it...maybe your death had a greater impact on him than we could even fathom.

"That's about it for this year, Shadow-san." Sonic stood up at last, and turned his green-eyed gaze to the stars. "It's been great talking to you. See ya later, man..." Sonic turned, and without a second glance back, walked out of the bridge, the door sealing shut with a steely hiss.

"What? You've got to be kidding me." Knuckles the Echidna, Guardian of Angel Island, and protector of the Master Emerald, allowed a low growl to escape from the back of his throat.

"No bullshit on my end of the train tracks, Red," the face displayed on the video screen in front of him replied, locking his violet eyes into a serious gaze, not at all like that smug one that she would have flashed him five years ago. "GUN is after the Master Emerald, but they're keeping it top-secret. Expect the attack to come through from the judicial system."

"Thanks a lot, Rouge," Knuckles replied evenly. "I guess you'll be backing me up?"

"You kidding me? The entire way!" Rouge replied, smirking.

'Ahhh...' Knuckles thought to himself, grinning. 'THERE is that smug look that I know so well.'

"Good to know," Knuckles replied, still grinning. "I know with the best lawyer on the planet on my side, I can't lose."

Rouge's cheeks flushed, but the smirk on her face shifted into a sly grin. "Is that a clever way of asking me out on a date?"

This time, it was Knuckles that was the one to blush, but unlike Rouge, still didn't have a handle on the emotions that arose whenever a girl tried to ask him out.

"Err--errr--I guess--yeah, I--I dunno--yes!" Knuckles finally spat the last word out, and sighed with relief. 'Rouge has been after me for four and a half years...it was only a matter of time before she got me.'

"Great. I'll meet you at Angel Island in a few hours, the Chaos Shrine." Rouge blew Knuckles a kiss, winked, and signed off.

Knuckles sighed, and switched off the monitor, collapsing back into the chair that had been propped up behind him.

"You know, one of these days, you will have to get married," a cool voice said from behind him. "You'll need to pass the mantle as Guardian of the Master Emerald onto somebody at some point. I'd trust my own offspring rather than somebody else's."

"Yeah, well, you don't know her like I do, Espio," Knuckles said, looking back at the purple chameleon that was standing behind the chair, wearing a cool smirk. "Thanks for relaying the message to me, by the way."

"I figured that if some high-ranking military force is gonna come after the Master Emerald, it would help if you knew. Unless I wanted to risk getting my horn pounded into my head, I mean." Espio's cool sarcasm was fittingly punctuated with a light chuckle.

"Well, looks like we Chaotix have our work cut out for us again," Knuckles said, pushing out of the chair, catching it with one hand before it could fall to the floor. He spun it around and sat it back on all four legs.

"You plan to get the entire Chaotix involved in this?" Mild shock crept into the Guardian's chameleon friend's voice.

"Hey, you guys are my team." Knuckles flashed Espio a roguish grin. "I'm sure Vector's bored of listening to music all day anyway, right? And surely Might and Ray'll wanna come along. We're gonna have some adventuring to do before we can make a move against GUN in the courts." Espio nodded slowly as it began to dawn on him. "Oh...oh! I get it now...I'll go get a hold of Mighty and Ray right now! Think you can get to Vector?"

"Don't worry about it." Knuckles walked past Espio, towards the trapdoor that led out of his invisible tree house. "Let's shake a leg, we don't want to keep Rouge waiting."

"Nothing quite like relaxing on the beach and picking up chicks after a long adventure." The teen wearing blue, swirl-patterned swimming trunks and dark sunglasses rested both hands underneath his head, kicking his legs up. He was lying on top of a towel, shaded from the harsh light of the sun by a large umbrella stuck into the sand. He reached over, grabbed a chilled cup of some kind of tropical drink, and took a sip through the straw.

"Taaails!! I found a seashell that looks kinda weird. I think you should check it out."

Tails growled under his breath, and flipped his sunglasses up to his forehead, and saw his girlfriend, Amy Rose Thorn, standing with her back to him, admiring something in her hands. "Of course, with a girl like Amy around, I'll never pick up anybody." Tails sighed, flipped his sunglasses back down over his eyes, set his drink down in the sand, and flipped up to his feet, which were protected by sandals from the scorching sand. He walked over to his pink-furred hedgehog girlfriend, who was wearing a yellow thong, and a rather revealing top that was the same bright yellow color as the thong.

In the past five years, Tails and Amy had grown greatly inwardly as well as outwardly. Not only had Tails lost his slight chubbiness and become more streamlined as Sonic and Knuckles had been at sixteen, but he had also grown taller and noticeably sexier, not to mention smarter and gaining a rogue, adventurous attitude that could only be blamed on Sonic for the kitsune's inheritance of the trait. He still loved to tinker on machines, especially his Tornado V, and he always looked forward to the challenge of creating something that could completely massacre anything Eggman would make. Even so, he would take any given opportunity to go out on an adventure, especially if it meant that there would be cute girls along the way or at their destination.

Amy, too, had grown up quite a bit; now an adult in physical terms, Amy was taller and definitely more sexy than she had been five years earlier, and her current attire served her complete justice plus one. She still kept her quills in the same style, but they, too, had grown considerably longer, the longest reaching down between her shoulder blades. As far as personality went, Amy was still the cheerful hedgehog she was five years ago, and to the outside eye, seemed a bit naive, not all there, and possibly even annoying. Tails knew the dark story that most others did not about the female hedgehog anthromorph, though, and even if he didn't show it very well outwardly, he loved Amy very deeply on the inside.

"What's up, Amy?" Tails asked, coming to a stop and crossing his arms over his white-furred chest next to his girlfriend. In her hands, Amy held a large, white seashell.

"I found this shell in the sand," Amy murmured quietly, looking at Tails, her olive-green eyes staring vacantly at him. Tails gently took the shell from Amy's hands, and inspected it, running his furry fingers lightly over the white ridges on the top side.

"It seems like a regular shell to me, Ames," Tails said, lifting his sunglasses to see the shell in a better light.

"Flip it over, you're looking at the wrong side."

Tails did as Amy suggested, and gasped. "Whoa...this is an interesting find, Amy..." Tails held the shell up to his face, inspecting the underside of the shell. It was shaped geometrically, as if it had imprinted onto something made of flat sides and sharp edges. Flecking the shell's insides were dark blue, sparkling gems that were no bigger than a few millimeters in diameter, at the most.

"What do you think it is, Tails?" Amy asked softly. "It reminds me of the Chaos Emerald, don't you feel it?"

"Hmm..." Tails murmured. "Could it be that one of the Chaos Emeralds was lost in the ocean all these years...?"

"Hey, Tails. Hey, Amy."

Tails gasped, and looked up to see who had called them. It was none other than his surrogate older brother, Sonic the Hedgehog. He was standing back at the beach set-up Tails had just abandoned, sunglasses over his own eyes, and a smirk on his face.

"Hiya, Sonic!" Amy said cheerfully, smiling.

"Amy, how you been, girl?" Sonic asked, walking over to the female hedgehog, holding out a gloved hand. Amy accepted the hand and shook it lightly.

"I'm good, Sonic. Tails and I were just hanging out, you know?"

"I can see that." Sonic flashed Tails a mischievous grin, and Tails returned it widely. "Hey, Amy? Would you mind taking a short walk down the beach a little bit? I need to speak with Tails alone."

"Sure thing, Sonic!" Amy replied cheerily. She turned, and walked away down the beach.

"I feel kinda bad of taking advantage of her like that...Tails, how is she really?" Sonic asked the kitsune lowly when Amy was out of earshot.

"Not getting any better," Tails muttered darkly, flipping his sunglasses up again and staring at the sparkling sand underneath his feet. "Everything I build just doesn't seem to undo the process. That bastard sure did a number on her..."

"Don't worry, buddy..." Sonic said, placing a comforting hand on Tails' shoulder. "You'll figure it out someday. You're as smart, if not smarter than Eggman. You'll get Amy back to normal, I know you will."

"That's not the only reason why you came here, is it?" Tails asked, bringing his ice-blue gaze up to Sonic's emerald green one. Even though the fastest hedgehog in the world was so close to him, Tails hid his emotions carefully; he refused to let Sonic see his true sorrow for Amy, for even a fraction of that sorrow was enough to make the teenage kitsune cry.

Sonic pulled his sunglasses off his face, and walked around Tails so that he was staring out to the ocean. "You know what yesterday was, right?"

"Of course, how could I forget?" Tails turned to stand next to Sonic, looking out at the sparkling ocean as well. "Yesterday was the fifth year anniversary of Shadow's death. I know you're the only one going to the ARK now, Sonic, I keep tabs on you and the others. But you know why I can't go anymore...if Amy goes up there, she'll start to cry...and if Eggman were up there, that would make things even worse...I wouldn't be able to live with myself if she started to cry." Tails' voice became thick for a moment, but he coughed and cleared it away. "I can't take my eyes off her for too long, Sonic. She's still in danger, you know that. I pay my respects to Shadow in my own way."

"Just making sure, bro." Sonic flashed a roguish grin, which Tails returned half-heartedly. "Say, what's that you've got there?"

"Hmm? Oh, I forgot about this..." Tails passed the seashell Amy had found to Sonic, the underside facing upwards. "Seems like one of the Chaos Emeralds we've been missing is somewhere under the ocean."

"Well, there's a whole lot of ocean to explore on this planet, Tails," Sonic said dubiously. "The chances are that we're not going to find it any time soon."

"Judging by the fact that there are some fragments of the Emerald in this shell, and an imprint also, I'd say that this thing was resting on top of or underneath the Emerald for quite a while. And common sense denotes that if we're finding this shell now, the Emerald has to be somewhere close by."

"Well yeah, this is true...but neither of us can swim, remember?"

"We could always call Knuckles..."

"Nah." Sonic fixed Tails with a serious gaze. "I spoke with Rouge recently, seems like Rad Red's gonna have his hands full."

"Looks like the Tornado V needs a quick overhaul and upgrade, then." Tails grinned. "Thanks, Sonic."

"Hey, what are best friends for, right?" Sonic winked. "We're so close to finding all seven...if we find the one that fell into the ocean, that leaves the one Shadow was holding when he...wow, whaddaya know? Full-circle conversation." Tails laughed, and Sonic chuckled.

"This probably means we'll have to find Shadow's body, you realize." Tails' voice was serious very suddenly. "I know how Amy will handle it, but I've got the solution for that. It's you I'm worried about."

"I've got everything under control, don't worry." Sonic said, winking once again. "This'll be just like the good old days, you and me on an adventure again..."

"Sounds like fun." Was the kitsune's reply.
