Chapter Two: Search for a Friend

"Shadow wake up already!" A loud voice called cutting through his dreams. He sat up and saw Laura standing there with her arms folded. "I have to go to work." She said. "You stay here and rest." Then she turned and walked out the door. Shadow sighed. He thought hard for a moment. Why had he been falling through the atmosphere. He looked down at himself. Then he noticed that one of his wrist rings was missing. "I remember now." He thought to himself. "Sonic caught that when it fell off my arm and...." Sonic! How could he have forgotten his friends? His only friends. "They probably think I'm dead." He said to himself. "Maybe I should be." He shook his head. "No!" "Don't think that!" He searched through Laura's desk and found the phone book. He began searching through it for Sonic's address. He had to find the others!

"Laura!" She jumped and looked up. Her boss looked down at her frowning. "Are you okay?" "I was up late last night." She lied. She had been thinking about Shadow. "Well don't let it happen again." He told her. "We've got CD's to sell." He walked out. Laura sighed and got back to work. After serving 20 more customers Laura left the music store and headed back to her apartment. As she was walking she saw a glint of a camera flash. She looked in the bushes where she had seen the flash. Nothing. She turned and left. Meanwhile in a nearby tree a dark figure looked down at Laura's picture. He smiled to himself. "So this is Shadow's girlfriend." He said evilly. "Excellent."

Shadow smiled and looked at his newly healed arm. A week had passed since he had met Laura and during that time they had become friends. He still hadn't found Sonic or the others but he was getting close. He could feel it. He glanced at the clock. Laura would be home any minute. During the week he had told her all about his past. She had been helping him look for Sonic. Suddenly something smashed through the window behind him! "What the hell?!" He saw a brick laying on the ground among the broken glass. He picked it up and saw a note attached to it. It said:

We have your friend. If you want to see her alive again meet me in the ARK's abandoned lab tonight at midnight or we will kill her. Do I make myself clear?

A friend.

Shadow looked at the note in horror. Anger filled him. Now he HAD to find Sonic and the others quick! Then it hit him! Amy! Amy wasn't really as famous as Sonic or Tails so she would probably be listed in the phonebooks. He flipped through it and sure enough he saw her name and address. He tore out the page and shot out the door. There was no time to waste!

Amy sighed. Two weeks since Shadow died. "I wonder how Knuckles and Rouge are taking it." She thought to herself. Ever since the whole incident up on the ARK Rouge had decided to help Knuckles guard the Master Emerald. At first he hadn't trusted her but they had become pretty good friends. Just then the doorbell rang. She opened the door and froze. Shadow was standing there looking worried but alive. "SHADOW?!" She cried blinking back tears of happiness. "I'm so glad you're okay!" she cried. "I mean..." "We all thought the worst." "No time for chit-chat Amy." Shadow said quickly. "Is Sonic here?" "Yeah he and Tails are in the other room." She said smiling. "They'll be so happy!" Shadow followed Amy into the living room. Tails and Sonic sat there talking but when they saw Shadow they froze. Then Tails fainted.

"....So then I found this note telling me Laura had been kidnapped and I had to meet someone up on the ARK to get her back." Shadow had been telling them what happened after he fell through the atmosphere. Tails had finally woken up just in time to hear the story. "Don't worry buddy." Sonic said standing up. "We'll get your friend back." "And we'll make the person who took her wish he was never born!"
