Chapter Three: Daring Rescue

After stealing a small space craft from Dr. Eggman they left for the ARK. They were joined by Rouge and Knuckles who had left the Master Emerald with Tikal. When they reached the ARK Amy demanded that she be included in this mission. Sonic finally caved in and let her come. When they reached the lab a shocking sight await them. Laura was in the capsule in the center of the room. "Laura!" Shadow cried running over to her. "Shadow!" She screamed. "Don't come in!" "It's a trap!" Suddenly the only door sealed shut behind them. "How did that happen?" Rouge wondered aloud. "I wondered whether you'd show up Shadow." An icy voice whispered.

A man stepped out of the shadows and smiled evilly. "Who are you?" Shadow asked. "My name is Dr. Johnson." He said. "Why did you kidnap Laura?" Sonic asked angrily. "To get Shadow to come here obviously." He said rolling his eyes. "What do you want with me?" Shadow said getting annoyed by all the questions by everyone was asking. "An interesting story." "It begins 50 years ago." "I worked on the ultimate life form project with professor Gerald Robotnik." "He wanted to use Shadow to benefit mankind but I saw his true purpose." "As a weapon of mass destruction!"

"Gerald caught me trying to change Shadow to obey my commands." "He was so mad he cut me from the project." "I was furious." "I wanted revenge but it would have to wait." "But I got revenge." "I got the sweetest revenge possible." "What did you do?" Rouge asked. "It happened the day of G.U.N's invasion of the ARK." "The soldiers were never given the orders to kill Maria." "They just had to get rid of anyone in the way." "I was the one who shot Maria." "Not a soldier." "YOU WHAT!?" Shadow roared. He'd had enough! "I'm gonna kill you!" He yelled running toward him. "I wouldn't do that if I were you." Johnson said putting his finger close to a large button on the consol in front of him. "I've rigged your girlfriend's capsule with bombs." "If you try anything not only will I launch her into space I'll kill her as well." "You coward." Knuckles said angrily. "Now I want you to join me and help me conquer earth or...." He laughed. "Well I don't think I have to tell you what will happen." "You have 10 minutes to decide."

Everyone stepped outside the room to talk. "What are you going to do?" Amy asked Shadow. "I don't know." He whispered with his head bowed. "I can't join him, that goes against everything I promised Maria." "But I can't sacrifice Laura either." They stood there for 10 minutes. Shadow was in deep thought. After time was up. Shadow nodded. "I've made my decision." They walked in. "Have you made up your mind yet?" Johnson asked. "Yeah." Shadow responded. "I've decided.... TO KICK YOUR BUTT!" Suddenly he did a lighting quick homing attack that knocked him to the floor. Shadow ran over to the consol and pushed a button.. The capsule lifted up freeing Laura. She ran over and hugged Shadow. "You saved me!" She cried. "Yeah I guess I did." Shadow said blushing furiously. "Let's get out of here!" Rouge yelled.

They dashed down the hall laser flying all around them. (Johnson was firing at them with a phaser.) The finally reached the space craft and took off. As they were flying back to earth a voice came in over the radio. "I'll get you Shadow." The voice said. "You can't stay safe for long." "You're mine." "Turn it off." Shadow said. Tails shut the radio off. "You don't think he's serious about coming back do you Shadow?" Laura asked. Shadow didn't answer. He gazed out the window silently.

The next day...

Shadow walked down the street. He couldn't believe it. Just 2 weeks ago he'd wondered if life was worth living. Now he had friends and good life. "Maybe I did die and go to heaven." He thought to himself. "Shadow!" A voice called. He turned around and saw Laura running up the street towards him. "We're all going to the movies tonight to celebrate our victory." "Can you make it?" "The movie starts at 7:00." Shadow smiled. "Yeah I can come." "Great!" She said. "And..." "I want to thank you for saving me." Then Laura did something she'd never done before. She kissed him on the cheek. Shadow's face went bright red. He wouldn't have been surprised if there was steam coming out of his ears. Then she turned and walked away. "I'll keep my promise to you Maria." Shadow whispered. "I'll work with Sonic and keep the people of earth happy." "And maybe I can find happiness for myself."
